about
This song was co-written with my younger sister from love, with love, as we contemplated our relationship with both Spirit and our ancestors. “Anaha ya,” they say, when we wonder where they are or if they care. “Here I am, right here beside you,” they whisper, through our deepest joys and sorrows.
🍂
This song marks our first time specifically connecting our Afro-indigenous language and spirituality to our music and it was a joy every step of the way, especially since we both have spent our lives in far off lands away from Garifuna community.
lyrics
Brown skin girl, I want her
to lift her hands in the air and sing,
“Ubei sun bubafunu, thy will be done,
thy will be done”
Brown skin girl, I am her
I lift my hands in the air and sing,
“I love you and I want you to hear my voice,
to hear my voice”
Where are you?
(I’m tryina find you honey)
Who are you?
(You’ve been living in my head)
Where will I see you?
(I’ve been right beside you honey)
Right beside you honey
Brown skin girl, I hear you
as you lift your hands in the air and sing,
“Anaha ya, I’m right beside ya,
When you lift your hands and sing”
Ubeisun bubafunu, give us this day
Give us this day
(Anaha ya)
I’m right beside you honey
(Anaha ya)
You’ve been living in my head
(Anaha ya)
I’ve been right beside you honey
Right beside you honey
Anaha ya
(I’m tryina find you honey)
Anaha ya
(You’ve been living in my head)
Anaha ya
(I’ve been right beside you, honey)
Right beside you, honey
Right beside you, I’ve been right beside you honey
Anaha ya

This is the album that hands down galvanized me into getting off my butt and out of my insecurities, and just start making my own music. It speaks directly to my soul. Feroza Cayetano
I have played this album on loop every since I discovered it. It has everything that I enjoy: harmonies, mantras, soul in her voice and authenticity of the acoustics. I'm so impressed and inspired! Feroza Cayetano
